I like it a lot, but the range is not that broad (i mean explosion range).. It's very good against Moss Scarabs and such though..

Does the explosion on impact only do damage to the target you've selected? Or is there an actual area? I just received the skill recently and haven't been able to test it against many groups.

Yes it has range. And yes i think this is an awesome nuke spell. just go to a group, target someone, and use it. everyone around u gets hit for tons, then everyone around the target gets hit. even if ure fight just one guy, its worth it because this spell can crit for 200. and times that by the amount of people u hit.

I always wonder about these exploading spells. When they expload do they hit/hurt/dmg party members, allies, and pets?

I think this spell is stupid. You're an elementarist. The last thing u want to do is get close to your enemies with your puny armor

There's no offensive spell that harms allies to the best of my knowledge, and there's no such thing as critical hits with spells.
Spell damage will always deal the same amount consistently under the same conditions.
The difference between hitting one lvl 20 warrior and another may be that he's using Frenzy or Healing Signet, or his level of absorption. Assuming all things equal, and no skills that cause the user to take increased damage, both targets would take the same damage from your spells.
Phoenix is like 2 different spells in one. Inferno + Fire Ball. Not quite, but it's pretty much it.
What that means is, unless you'd normally use skills like Inferno and Lava Burst, it's half useless to you most of the time. If you're an elementalist with no defensive buff enchantments on, and you're in inferno range, then you're going to die most likely, especially as the monsters get to level 24 and up regularly.
For PvP, you've got to get up close to your target to hit them with both hits, and cast, hoping they stand still for the entire casting time. If they move out of the first half of the spell's range, the second half isn't all that strong. (The first has about 20-30 more power then the second hit)
At 3 seconds casting time, with a long recharge, it's not really the most effective skill.

Personally, I'd never use it in PVP but it's a great starter skill in PVE since you can get it early from Grendich Courthouse. As you move up in levels though, meteor/meteor shower are your best bets for AOE damage.

Mercury Angel has it on the nose.
It's got its uses, but there are much better spells to select from later on.

This spell like all the other spells usefulness is dependant upon the other spells you use in conjuction with it. It also is dependant on when and how you use the spell. If you put on magnetic aura, kinetic armor, or stone armor and go in close and use this in conjunction with some of the other area effects of fire you have a decent spike potential in an area of effect. Another bonus to this spell is if you are willing to get in close it has very high damage and it does not cause exaustion. That is one major player for this spell. It has high damage and no exaustion.

yes for a primary elementalist it can be stupid, but what if you are not primary ele but secundary? I'm a R/Ele and this spell is very useful. I have the armor to stand in the middle of 5 enemys, cast the spell, deal alot of dmg and then run away that the warrior can neal them down at one point and then I can use Fireball. So is not stupid, one of my favorite spells.

About Phoenix
I think it is quite usefull but I do think Fireball is way better. It deal more damage over long range. The proximity damage is nice but the last thing an elementalist wants is to get in middle of a fight. It can be usefull if a warrior tries to make u a meter shorter though. Then the proximity damage is a usefull addition to the normal damage. But for long range, fireball is better.
U can buy it at grendich courthouse by the way. It's north of Nolani Academy.
